Eventually, you will want to start hosting and/or sponsoring local events, especially when the subject matter is appropriate, and might allow your own participation in the subject being presented.
Speaking at Local Events –
This can be a bit scary if you are not comfortable speaking before groups, so you might want to start with smaller networking groups, such as leads groups and breakfast meetings, but it is really an excellent way to get yourself known to the local community.
Advertise Online and Offline –
Don’t limit your advertising and press releases to just online. Instead, send out press releases locally, and advertise in the local publications as well as on TV and the radio. If you are hosting, sponsoring or coordinating a local event, especially a fundraising event, you might even call your local TV stations as they will often cover interesting community stories.
Be Active Online –
You can become well-known in your local community by being very active on Facebook with your local people. Join local Facebook groups, publish locally-focused articles on LinkedIn, and mention local people and businesses on Instagram.
Join Local Business Organizations –
Don’t just be someone who attends things; be someone who joins and actively participates! Every local business organization needs ongoing support to keep things running – be the one that volunteers and gets the job done. It’s the perfect way to interact naturally with other members, and get better known.
Be a Resource to Others –
Reciprocate! If you want others to send you referrals, you have to do the same. Always be thinking of others in your networking groups that you can refer new business to – the favour will be returned!
Use Informative Handouts at Events –
Don’t just give out the same sales flyer or useless widget that other business hand out at events. Create a useful report that can be downloaded at your website and put the link on your business cards or turn it into a pamphlet that can be branded with your contact details for a giveaway with value!
One of the best ways to get known in your community is to get actively involved in volunteer work. It’s a win-win for everyone, and a great way meet your community in a positive atmosphere.
